Design – as a way of thinking, as a process to guide projects and as an approach to creating experiences is at the core of the work of Emergent Form. While this spills out into other dimensions of service, it can also be considered alone as a key part of the work. This is much more than aesthetics. It is about gaining a deep understanding of an issue through a) iterative inquiry (in this regard not unlike research), b) abstracting and modelling (like strategy) and revolves around c) creating experiences, products and services that fit well into the world.
In the KT Studio years, a design approach become dominant work mode for applied research. This was whether the design was about software, online experience, physical interaction or spaces. Emergent Form will continue to focus on design but there will be an additional layer of complexity (and possibility) brought about by the virtual Studio or capability network approach. Critical to future projects will be:
- Design thinking – a mindset or approach to ‘problem solving’ that involves iteration, renewal and engagement.
- Design process – embodying the philosophy of design in a series of processes appropriate to the project phases.
- Designing experiences – multi-modal experience combining reality and virtuality
